Kimmo Pohjonen Concert

Monday, May 30, 8:00 PM, Students’ House of Culture

An exceptional artist, known for his avant-garde and experimental work and for having revolutionized the sound of the accordion, Kimmo Pohjonen returns to Romania after his 2014 concert at Garana Jazz Festival. According to All About Jazz, Kimmo Pohjonen "has been stretching boundaries and defying expectations for more than a decade, with mind-blowing concepts and visual performances.” For instance, in Earth Machine Music, the artist incorporates sounds from a farm into his performances. He has released over 10 albums, has composed music for films, has toured world-wide, and has collaborated with a variety of artists, including DakhaBrakha (a TIFF 2013 guest) and the Kronos Quartet. In 2012, the artist was awarded the Aesthetic Act of 2012 Prize for a project involving Romanian street musicians in Helsinki. The same year, he was awarded the prestigious Order of the Lion of Finland / Pro Finlandia Prize.

Unique in his style, Kimmo Pohjonen is at the centre of a documentary screened at TIFF a day prior to the concert, Soundbreaker, directed by Kimmo Koskela. Selected in many festivals, the film presents the artist’s 35-year career and contains interviews, photos, music, and unpublished archival material. At TIFF, Kimmo Pohjonen (accordion, voice, sound) will be performing alongside Heikki Iso-Ahola (sound design) and Otso Vartiainen (lighting design). Ticket prices start at 25 lei during the pre-sale period, until May 1st, 30 lei afterwards, and can be purchased here.

Ciné-concert A Hawk and a Hacksaw: Live score for the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

Tuesday, May 31, 8:00 PM, Students’ House of Culture

Wednesday, June 1st, 10:00 PM, Casa TIFF

An exuberant combination of genres ranging from Gipsy and klezmer to Mariachi, A Hawk and a Hacksaw’s ciné-concert, a multi-instrumental, Balkan-folk project, is yet another headliner at TIFF 2016. The two American artists Jeremy Barnes (former Neutral Milk Hotel member) and Heather Trost will perform their original music as live accompaniment to Ukrainian film director Sergei Paradjanov’s famous 1965 Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, one of very few films spoken in the Hutsul language. The show is electrifying: at times, the musicians play three instruments simultaneously. Traditional Romanian music and fiddlers were constant sources of inspiration for the duo: one of their albums, The Way the Wind Blows (2006), was recorded partly in the Zece Prăjini village with the Zece Prăjini Fanfare. On June 1, A Hawk and a Hacksaw will also play at Casa TIFF, starting form 10:00 PM.
