Festival Regulations

 

Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF)  is presented by Romanian Film Promotion. It is the first international feature film festival in Romania.

Transilvania IFF has as its main objective the promotion of cinematographic art by presenting some of the most innovative and spectacular films of the moment that feature both originality and independence of expression, that reflect unusual cinematic language forms or focus on current trends in youth culture. It is meant to be an annual event.

The 11th  edition of Transilvania IFF will be held between the June 1-10, 2012 in the city of  Cluj-Napoca, Transilvania. The films will be shown in equipped cinemas, whenever possible, each will be screened twice and in unconventional venues (open-air cinemas, squares etc)

The Festival consists of the following sections:

Official Competition

Competitive section, main competition of the festival offering a significant selection of current international young cinema. The competition is open only the first and second feature films only.

Shadows

Competitive section for horror and fantasy short films (with a maximum duration of 25 min) Showcase of horror&fantasy features.

Romanian Days

Competitive section which includes the most recent Romanian short and feature films (premiered in 2011-2012). Retrospectives of Romanian films.

FIPRESCI Competition

Every year, the most important organization of film journalists worldwide, FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics)  offer the FIPRESCI Award to one of the eligibile films scheduled in the festival's program. The FIPRESCI list may include films from any section of the Transilvania IFF.

SuperNova

Non-competitive panorama, including films awarded in other festivals, which aroused exceptional world interest during the last season and a local distributors program featuring special premieres for Romanian public.

Non-competitive section including 3 profiles of established filmmakers featuring 3 films each

No limit

Non-competitive section presenting transgressive and provocative if not offensive films

Focus

Non competitive section which brings to audience the most innovative and fresh productions from a specific country.

Besides the classical film screenings, TIFF organizes yearly a series of special events, conferences and  digital workshops, debates, media educational programmes and so on.

For the Official competition, FIPRESCI and Romanian Days competition, the film rights holder will offer free of charge film screening rights without asking any screening fee from the festival.

The films entered for the first three sections must comply with the following conditions:

 

1. Entries must have been produced within the last two years and not previously screened in Romania.

2. The films submitted must be the national premieres*.

3. The screening format for features must be 35 mm or video/digital (HDCAM, DVCAM, DIGIBETA – PAL system, or exceptionally - BETA NTSC)

4. All feature films will be presented in their original versions with Romanian subtitles or simultaneous translation. The film rights holder must submit the English dialogue list or, exceptionally, the French dialogue list.

5. There are no restrictions by length or genre for films, with the exception of Short competition in the Shadows section.

An international jury composed of 5 personalities of various nationalities from the world of cinema and the arts will judge the competitive films and award the following prizes:

"Transilvania" Trophy  - for the best film in competition

 Best director

 Best script

 Best cinematography

 Best Actor/actress

 Submission rules:

A fully completed entry form together with a screener DVD of the film, film stills, synopsis and the dialogue list should be sent to the festival office as it follows:

February 15, 2012- for films submitted in the Official Competition and the Shadows competition

March 15, 2012 – for films submitted in the Romanian Days competition

Films submitted after these dates are not eligible!

Rules for preview by the selection committee:

All transport costs incurred by sending the print to and from Romania must be borne by the entity or individual(s) registering it for participation.

The Festival insurance policy covers fire, theft, damage and destruction of the print for the period spanning its arrival until its return. The film must be sent prepaid. The Festival will not pay for the return transportation charges.

 Preview tapes of films not selected cannot be returned unless specifically agreed in advance.

The sender is requested to inform the Festival on the means of dispatch, date of shipment, flight and Airway bill number.

The selection committee will try to inform the applicants of its decision by April 27, 2012

The Festival Direction will determine the order and date of the screening of all films.

The Festival is open to the public. A significant number of accredited national and international press, TV and distributors also participate.

Directors whose films have been selected for competition are invited as participants for the festival's duration. Accommodation, travel costs and allowance costs (hotel, meals) of the participants are covered by the Transilvania IFF.

All prints will be returned within four weeks after the festival. If the film has to be returned to another address this has to be marked on the application form as well as the desired date of arrival at the return address.

Prints should be forwarded by courier to:

Transilvania International Film Festival, address: St. Popa Soare no. 52, ap. 4; Bucharest 2, Romania.

They must arrive before May 11th, 2012

Press material and publicity for each film (5 press-books and 10 stills plus 1 Beta SP promos and 10 posters) must also reach the Festival by May 11th, 2012

Participation in the Festival implies the unconditional acceptance of all aforementioned regulations.
