Crowdfunding campaign for The Film Warehouse in Cluj

“Save the Big Screen!”, the first and largest campaign aimed at raising public awareness and drawing the authorities’ attention towards finding solutions for the rehabilitation of the Romanian cinema theatre network, calls for funds for The Film Warehouse

The crowdfunding campaign was officially launched during the opening ceremony of the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF), May 30, and aims to transform one of the most interesting places in Cluj into an alternative space for urban culture to host film screenings and other cultural events. The former film warehouse of RADEF RomâniaFilm, at no. 31-35 on Maiakovski str., is a deserted place at the present. It is spectacular due to the thousands of abandoned film strips and its history.

The Film Warehouse  can become, both through its potential as an alternative space for urban culture, and through its historical and cultural value, the best space to found a Museum of Cinema. It should be aligned with our understanding of a museum in the twenty-first century, a living institution, where children and adults can get educated and can experiment with interactive activities.

The Film Warehouse can be turned from being just a point on a map, an abandoned place, buried between thousands of film rolls, into a place that can become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Cluj.

We now need 7000 euros to activate a dead, decrepit space. We aim to surround the area with a fence, protect it and clean it, then rehabilitate the space so that it can host open-air events and eventually become a nice place for parents and children. We also need to acquire the technical equipment needed for film screenings.
