TIFF.2 - 2003

The second edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) took place from May 23 to May 31, 2003, in Cluj-Napoca. The Romanian presence was marked in particular by Radu Muntean’s film Furia. It was the only Romanian feature selected in the Official Competition, competing directly with 12 other international films for the main trophy. The festival also included special screenings and debates that anticipated the birth of the Romanian New Wave.

Jury

The 2003 Official Competition Jury was made up of a mix of international specialists and renowned film critics:

Ludmila Cvikova – Acclaimed programmer of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Alissa Simon – Artistic Director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, USA.

Alex. Leo Șerban – One of the most important and influential film critics in Romania.

Olivier Nicklaus – French director and film critic.

Special guests

Barry Gifford – Celebrated American novelist and screenwriter, best known for his collaboration with director David Lynch. He wrote the screenplay for the cult film Lost Highway and the novel Wild at Heart. He was present in Cluj not only as a guest, but also as an honorary member of the competition jury.

Helen Sanchez – Renowned programmer at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, who came to discover new talent from Eastern Europe.

Dorel Vișan – The guest of honour representing Romanian cinema, who received the Excellence Award for his entire artistic career during the closing gala.

Transilvania Trophy: Nói Albinói / Nói the Albino, directed by Dagur Kári, Iceland

Best Cinematography: Vivi Drăgan Vasile, for the cinematography of Furia

Jury Special Mention: Xavi Jiménez, for the cinematography of Intacto, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Spain

Best Performance: Henryk Gołębiewski, for his role in Edi, directed by Piotr Trzaskalski, Poland

Excellence Award: Dorel Vișan, Romania

Audience Award: Hable con ella / Talk to Her, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, Spain

Special Debut Award: Neagu Djuvara, for playing himself in the documentary Din răstimpul unei vieți

Critics’ Award: Nói Albinói / Nói the Albino, directed by Dagur Kári, Iceland

Aggresione Award for Best Young Romanian Actor: Diana Dumbravă, for her role in Maria, directed by Călin Netzer.
