Transilvania IFF in Sibiu

13.05.2010 03:00

Between 9 and 13 of June, Sibiu will once more enjoy the spirit of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF).

Organized for the fourth time in Sibiu, TIFF has prepared for the public of Sibiu a large number of films, titles for the first time screening in Romania, musical events, special guests and many other surprises, all part of a truly memorable celebration of cinema.

Piata Mica from Sibiu, Teatrul de Vara (The Summer Theatre) and Centrul Cultural Habitus (Habitus Cultural Center) will be the hosts of the TIFF 2010 screenings.

TIFF opens on the 9th of June, in Piata Mică, with the screening of The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu / Autobiografia lui Nicolae Ceauşescu, a documentary directed by Andrei Ujică. The closing screening at TIFF in Cluj, will open the TIFF in Sibiu, the film being thus screened for the second time in Romania, after having its world premiere at the Cannes Festival 2010 in the official selection outside the competition. 'Eventually, a dictator is just like an artist who has the opportunity to put into effect, and with no limits whatsoever, his egocentrism. It is just a question of aesthetics if his name is to be Baudelaire or Bolintineanu, Ludovic the XVI or Nicolae Ceausescu', Andrei Ujică has said about the protagonist of his film. Andrei Ujică's film presents the portrait of Nicolae Ceauşescu using entirely images taken from the Romanian National Television and National Film Archive, revealing the Romanian dictator in a completely different light for the Romanian public.

A spectacular animation film, Fantastic Mr. Fox, the most recent film from director Wes Anderson, will close the fourth edition of TIFF at Sibiu. The film will have its premiere in Romania on the 13th of June, in Piaţa Mica from Sibiu. Nominated for the Oscar and BAFTA Awards 2010 for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Music, Fantastic Mr. Fox has enchanted both the audience and the critics, who have had it nominated and awarded for an impressive number of critic's awards, such as New York Film Critics Circle Awards, National Society of Film Critics Awards (USA), Online Film Critics Society Awards, San Francisco Film Critics Circle and many others. George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman are just a few of the well-known actors whose voices will give life to Anderson’s characters. The public from Sibiu will be, no doubt, thrilled of the story that the funny Mr. Fox and his friends have gathered to tell.

Two Romanian films are rounding up the TIFF program in Piata Mică: Tuesday, after Christmas / Marţi, după Crăciun, directed by Radu Muntean, and If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle / Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier, directed by Florin Şerban, will be screened in Sibiu in the presence of their respective film crews.

Radu Muntean’s fourth feature is coming to Sibiu on the 12th of June, right after its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2010. Starring Mimi Brănescu, Maria Popistaşu and Mirela Oprişor, Tuesday, after Christmas tells the story of Paul Hanganu, who reaches a point in his life where he has to choose between remaining with his wife and their eight years old daughter and continuing his affairs with the mistress he is in love with.

In the evening of the 11th of June, the people of Sibiu will enjoy seeing the feature If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle under the moon light – one of the most debated and appreciated Romanian films from the beginning of this year, winner of the Silver Bear-Jury Grand Prix at the Berlin International Film Festival.
