Transilvania International Film Festival – 17th edition | May, 25th – June, 3rd, 2018, Cluj-Napoca
1. Summary
Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) is organized by Romanian Film Promotion and it is the first international feature film festival in Romania.
The main objective of Transilvania IFF is to promote the cinematic art by presenting some of the most significant films of the moment, films which exhibit not only originality and independence of expression, but also unusual forms of cinematic language and modern trends of the young culture.
Transilvania International Film Festival is an annual event and the 17th edition will be held between the 25th of May and the 3rd of June, in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania. Each of the selected films will be screened at least twice, both in traditional cinemas and in unconventional locations.
2. Sections
Official competition
Competitive section focused on films that are illustrative of the new wave in international cinema. The competition is open to first and second feature films only and must be national premieres.
Romanian Days
Competitive section focused on Romanian short and feature films produced between 2017 and 2018 and on Romanian cinema retrospectives. The Romanian feature films submitted for the Romanian Days competition must be national premieres.
Shadows
Showcase of genre (horror and fantasy) feature films and competitive section focused on horror and fantasy short films with a maximum duration of 25 minutes.
What's Up, Doc?
Non-competitive section presenting documentaries produced in the past two years, with a minimum duration of 60 minutes.
In addition to the aforementioned sections, the 16th edition of Transilvania International Film Festival will cover a series of special events, conferences, workshops, panels and debates, thematic sections focusing on a specific national cinema (Focus), sections focused on the work of three Romanian or foreign directors, each of them celebrated through three films (3X3), educational programs for young people and teens focused on media and cinema, concerts, photo exhibitions, book launches, and so on.
3. Official Competition Jury
An international jury composed of five international personalities of the seventh art will award the following prizes:
4. Awards
"Transilvania" Trophy – awarded to the best film in the Official Competition, worth 15.000 Euros (equally divided between the director and the main producer). The award cannot be awarded ex-aequo
Best Director – worth 5000 Euros (goes to the director of the film)
Special Jury Award – worth 1500 Euros (goes to the director of the film)
Best Performance award - worth 1000 euro (goes to the awarded actor or actress)
Best Actor or Actress – worth 1000 Euros (goes to the awarded actor or actress)
Other awards:
FIPRESCI Award – offered by a Jury composed by members of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) to a feature film from a thematic section chosen annually by the artistic director of the festival.
Audience Award – chosen by the audience, through vote, to a film from the Official Competition
Excellence Award – offered to a Romanian film personality
Lifetime Achievement Award – offered to an international film personality
Best "Shadows" Short – the prize money goes to the director of the film
Romanian Days Award: Feature Film – the prize money are equally divided between the director and the main producer
Romanian Days Award: Short Film – the prize money goes to the director of the film
Romanian Days Award: Best Debut– the prize money goes to the winner
5. Eligibility criteria
In order to be eligible, the films submitted for one of the first three sections must fulfill the following requirements:
1. They must be produced (the date of the first screening) in the last 2 years prior to the end period for the submissions.
2. Foreign and Romanian films submitted for the International Competition must be domestic premieres.
3. The Romanian feature films submitted for the Romanian Days competition must be domestic premieres.
4. The films are screened exclusively on 35 mm, DCP or HD file.
5. The films must be screened in the original version with Romanian and English subtitles (if they are made in a language other than English). If a film is selected, the distributor/producer of the film must provide the festival with the English dialogue list or, as an exception, the French dialogue list, containing the film timecode in one of the following formats - .srt, .stl, .sub, .ssa etc. Pdf or .xls files are not accepted.
6. There are no length or genre limitations – the only exception applies to the short films in the Shadows competition and for documentaries.
7. The festival will not pay screening fees for films submitted for any of the competitive sections - Official Competition, Romanian Days, FIPRESCI competition, Shadows Shorts.
6. Submission process
The distributor/producer of the film must fill out the online entry form on Eventival.eu. The guidelines and the entry online form can be found here: https://vp.eventival.eu/

Deadlines:
February 1, 2018 – for films submitted in the Official Competition, the Shadows section (both short and feature films) and What's Up, Doc?
March 1, 2018 – for films submitted in the Romanian Days short and feature films competitions
Films submitted after these dates will not be taken into consideration!
The distributor/producer of the film is fully responsible for the accuracy of the data provided in the entry form.
7. Festival participation
The organizers will announce the official selection before April 25th, 2018.
The distributor/producer of the film selected for one of the three competitive sections of the festival agrees to the screening of the film for free without requesting a screening fee.
The shipping costs for the print to and from Romania are supported by the distributor/producer of the film.
The Festival insurance policy covers fire, theft, damage and destruction of the print for the whole period of the festival.
The Festival organizers determine the official screening schedule (order and date, time and place of the screening).
The Festival is open to the general public. A significant number of accredited members of the written and audio-visual press, as well as distributors, also attend.
The directors whose films have been selected for the International Competition are invited as guests for the whole duration of the festival. Transilvania IFF covers full accommodation and travel costs.
The top winner of the festival (Transilvania Trophy) will be granted a no-screening-fee presentation during TIFF BUCHAREST, a limited selection of the most popular films shown at TIFF, that takes place right after TIFF CLUJ.
Participation in the Festival implies the unconditional acceptance of all the aforementioned rules and regulations.
Selection rules:
The screening copy should be sent together with 10 posters of the film by courier to the Festival Office: 52 Popa Soare Street, 1st floor, ap. 4, 2nd district, Bucharest, Romania.
The festival should receive the film no later than May 4th, 2018.
Press and publicity materials for each film should also reach the Festival Office by post or transfer ([email protected]) no later than May 4th, 2018.
The press kit must include booklet, hi-res stills, director's photo and biography, main actors' photos, dialogue list (in English or, as an exception, in French), trailer and technical specs.
Preview DVDs of films not selected will be returned only if the owner of the rights covers in advance the shipping costs.
