Balanescu Quartet, cine-concert „Faust” and „Battleship Potemkin”

Five special events which bring music in cinemas and film in unconventional spaces, will delight the audiences of the 13th edition of Transilvania International Film Festival (May 30 – June 8). Faust screened in a Church, Battleship Potemkin accompanied live by the daring sounds of a turbo-polka-ska band, a reinterpretation of the film-based-on-book 1984, a visual history of 3D film and a fascinating visual show inspired by Maria Tanase – these are only some of the not-to-be-missed experiences of TIFF 2014.

An unforgettable show will be „Maria T”, by Bălănescu Quartet, Monday, June 2, from 8.30 PM, at the Students' Culture House in Cluj. Inspired by Maria Tanase's songs, Alexander Balanescu created new ones by infusing the East-European spirit of the original songs with his Western experience.  The concert will also feature a visual show, a combination of Maria Tanase's archive footage and visuals by famed media artist and choreographer Klaus Obermaier.

Alexander Balanescu, considered one of the most visionary contemporary violin players, but also a quite prolific composer, was raised in Romania, studied in Jerusalem, New York and London and performed all over the world, in the '80, as leader of the Michael Nyman Ensemble. He recorded and played, among others, with Pet Shop Boys and Grace Jones and composed the score for many films, such as: Angels & Insects (by Philip Haas), Il Partigiano Johnny (by Guido Chiesa), Eisenstein (by Renny Bartlett). The artist will play on Tuesday, June 3, at 10 PM in Casa TIFF.

Bringing together heavy-metal fans and lovers of polka, jazz and rock, Austrian band Russkaja comes to Cluj with a show full of energy: live music on Sergei Eisenstein's masterpiece Battleship Potemkin (1925). Founded in Vienna, in 2005, by musician of diverse nationalities, the band played over 300 concerts all over the country. Tuesday, June 3, at 9.00 PM, the audience present in the Students' Culture House will have a hard time remaining seated: their music, a postmodern version of Russian folklore – kazachok & metal –, screams „Dance!”. Russkaja means: Georgij Makazaria (vocal), Dimitrij Miller (bass), Engel Mayr (guitar), Ulrike Müllner (violin), Rainer Gutternigg (trumpet), H-G. Gutternigg (potete), Mario Stübler (battery). The band will perform a second time in Casa TIFF, Wednesday, June 4, at 9 PM. The event was made possible with the support of Austriakult.

Another fresh show is „The Last Man” by the British band Teeth of the Sea, who will play live an original interpretation of George Orwell's masterpiece 1984. Wednesday, June 4, at 8.30 PM, at the Students' Culture House in Cluj, the totalitarian nightmare will be set against the today of globalization and digitalization. Together with visual artist Benjamin Barfoot, Teeth of the Sea recreates, via original music and images inspired by the film starring John Hurt and Richard Burton, the austere and absurd atmosphere of „1984”. Since 2006, Teeth of the Sea has constantly increased its reputation as the most adventurous psychedelic rock band in Great Britain. The band enjoyed similar success with its reinterpretations of Neil Marshall's Doomsday, and Kubrick's 2001. A Space Odyssey.

The Evangelical-Lutheran Church will host a one of a kind event on Wednesday, June 4, at 10 PM: one of the most talented Organ players in the world, Jan Esra Kuhl , will accompany live, for the first time ever, the silent masterpiece Faust (1926), by F.W. Murnau. . The event is organized in partnership with the German Cultural Centre in Cluj.  The price for one ticket is 30 lei.

A fascinating presentation of the history of 3D, held by Stefan Droessler, director of the Munich Filmmuseum and one of the most famous experts in the evolution of the stereoscopic image, will walk the audience from the beginnings of cinema to the Steven Spielberg's era. The event will take place on Saturday, June 7, from 15 PM, at Cinema Florin Piersic."The Short Story of 3D Film”, presented at TIFF with the support of the Goethe institute, will encompass lesser known examples and images such as the ones created by Max Skladanowsky, Georges Méliès or brothers Lumière, followed by explanations about the technology as such and the challenges it was confronted with through the years. The price for one ticket is 10 lei if bought in advance and 12 lei if bought in the day of the event. Students and retired people have special ticket prices of 8 lei.

The ticket price for a special event taking place at the Students' Culture House is 30 lei. The Casa TIFF event tickets are 15 lei.
