Fashion and film co-starring in Cluj

For TIFFASHION, Fashion is a form of Art:

Film screenings, best designers of the moment, workshops

The 31st of May, Cluj, TIFFASHION – for the third year in a row, the Transilvania International Film Festival is presenting the TIFFASHION, a series of events meant to highlight the special status of fashion as a form of art  and the close connection between fashion and film.

This year, the organisers, TIFF and the online publication Stiletto.ro are inviting the festival visitors and the public of Cluj to come to a vintage fair with clothing and decorative items and objects, at a preview of the most interesting national designers' collections of clothing and accessories, at film screenings and at a very special workshop, meant to show once more the complementarities between the two forms of art: fashion and film.

Maitresse Maison, a partner location of TIFFASHION, is hosting a preview of the Autumn-Winter 2010-2011 collections, during the whole period of the event. The selection was made with the support of Cluj Fashion Week and includes several of the most interesting designers of clothing and accessories of the moment: Ada Bucsa, Alice Torella, Anca Ciataras, Carla Szabo, Carmen Secareanu, Cristina Batlan, Diana Nita, Dorin Negrau, Ioana Covalcic, Iris Serban, Lena Criveanu,  Lörincz Gyula,  Oana Lazar,  Raluca Nicolaescu and  Vika Gorenko. The great surprise of this year, Cristina Batlan has become a celebrity after the success she had with her accessories collection; she confessed that she responded positively to the challenge of designing clothing, in the memory of Alexandre McQuinn, being inspired by a powerful, sophisticate and extremely fashion-observant woman. 'I have processed the materials and transformed them into items of clothing, I have conjugated the experiment with classical, traditional elements – felt and wool veils held with leather belts, huge purses crafted with very special techniques, wood and plexi platforms, leather and wool gloves, necklaces.'

'I think I may be the right person to discuss and set up a workshop about fashion and film', tells us Oana Păunescu, designer of film costumes and art director of the DADA brand.

'They both have the intention to create for the human being. Nevertheless, fashion means creativity with an immediate purpose, selling, so it must flatter, it must please, it does subject to seasons and tendencies. At the other end, the film represents a world of stories and the costume designer is a storyteller, the one defining the personality of a character. We also sell, but we sell dreams.'

'We have developed a strong festival, well acknowledged, more and more complex as the years pass', tells us Oana Giurgiu, Executive Director of TIFF.

'The fact that several years ago we wanted to explore this connection between film and fashion and to present it to the public is nothing than a fair act of consideration towards Art and the Romanian artists.
