TIFF.20 - 2021
The anniversary edition of Romania’s largest film festival ended on August 1, after ten days marked by world premieres, dozens of sold-out screenings, meetings with more than 1,000 guests, and an impressive number of spectators. Over 100,000 cinema lovers celebrated #togetherthroughfilm the return to movie theaters on the 20th anniversary of TIFF, turning this year’s edition into the largest event organized in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
More than 93,000 ticket buyers attended the selection of 179 films from 47 countries across 17 indoor and outdoor venues. They were joined by audiences at concerts, masterclasses, and industry meetings held with free admission—bringing the total to over 100,000 participants.
The encounter with star Sergei Polunin, the special guest of TIFF 2021, was among the most attractive events of the edition. The show performed by the Ukrainian dancer at Bánffy Castle impressed audiences and set the highest-grossing record of the year.

Vânătorul de balene / The Whaler Boy, the debut of Russian director Philipp Yuryev, was awarded the Transilvania Trophy, worth 10,000 euros. The prize was presented by the edition’s special guest, Sergei Polunin, to whom a special moment was dedicated during the gala.

On Saturday, July 31, at 1:30 p.m., the surprise film of this edition will be screened in Romanian premiere. Actors Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard star in the story set in present-day Los Angeles. Henry is a stand-up comedian known for his caustic humor, while Ann is an opera singer performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages.
