A young, revolutionary couple aboard the last train leaving Budapest after the Russian invasion of 1956. Meanwhile a young catholic priest is imprisoned and tortured by the communists in order to deliver information about hidden Vatican treasures. The two story lines get intertwined during an exciting chess game, as it turns out that nobody and nothing there is what it seems to be.
