Cine-concert The Peasants
Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski is one of Poland’s most innovative musicians, known for his compositions that blend jazz with electronic music, hip-hop, and traditional rhythms. His shows deliver an eclectic and energetic musical mix, layered over film imagery or animated paintings. In 2023, together with the Rebel Babel Film Orchestra, Rostkowski composed the score for the film The Peasants (dir. DK Welchman, Hugh Welchman). Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Władysław Reymont, The Peasants is a stunning animation that transports viewers back to the late 19th century, into the world of a Polish village—deeply rooted in nature and tradition.
In the multimedia show The Peasants, musician Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski and the Rebel Babel Film Orchestra bring the film’s most impressive animated paintings to life, performing the soundtrack live. Using a diverse range of traditional Polish instruments—drums, guitar, accordion—as well as unique regional instruments such as the Płock fiddle, flute, and bagpipes, the orchestra explores folk rhythms, reinventing sound through modern arrangements and audio processing techniques. This rich sonic landscape is enhanced by choral voices. Joyful mazurka and polka rhythms, as well as ancient Slavic music, will resonate throughout The Peasants show—a journey through culture, history, and creativity.
The TIFF.24 cine-concerts are made possible with the support of MOL Romania.
