Film Food: Tastes and Stories from the World of Food at TIFF 2018

13.05.2018 15:50
Following the success of the first edition, the Film Food section returns to the Transilvania International Film Festival (May 25-June 3, Cluj-Napoca) with delicious stories about the culinary arts and the people who dedicated their lives to food.

The menu of secrets and spicy details offered by the film program will be doubled by live foodie experiences offered by three of the most appreciated chefs in Romania, invited to Cluj as special guests of the festival.

In Michelin Stars - Tales from the Kitchen, director Rasmus Dinesen serves a profound, honest, and timely analysis of the hierarchies established by the most popular restaurant guide in the world. What are the main qualities of the chefs on whom the three Michelin stars are bestowed? How profitable has this rating system become in the golden era of cuisine? What do the best-rated kitchens actually look like? All these questions are explored in a series of delectable interviews with industry representatives. The film, presented by Nespresso, will be followed by a special dinner prepared in the Bricks restaurant kitchen by chef Paul Oppenkamp. Oppenkamp has come to lead The Artist in Bucharest, rated by Trip Advisor as one of the best fine dining establishments in Europe, after a wide-ranging international experience. Known best for his modern approach to cooking, the Dutch-born chef combines classic techniques with modern cuisine and Romanian influences, generating surprising and revolutionary combinations of textures and flavors. The event will take place on Monday, May 28; a limited number of ticket packages for the film and the dinner will be made available to the public.

Mercedes Cordova’s Food on the Go invites us to a round-the-world adventure led by “cucina italiana,” the Mediterranean wealth of flavors that took over the world and reinvented itself with each new million of Italian immigrants settled in places like New York or Buenos Aires. Testimonies from around the globe tell us how Italian recipes have been reinvented to incorporate the cultural infusions of immigration or to address conflicts between various traditions. The screening, presented by Staropramen, will be followed by a dinner prepared by chef Alex Petricean (of D’artagnan, which creatively combines quality ingredients with modern textures and original techniques). Petricean is a master in some of the best Northern cusines. The dinner will take place at Bricks restaurant on Tuesday, May 29, starting at 8 PM.

TIFF audiences will also follow on screen the trajectory of Alain Ducasse, the world renowned master chef and culinary mentor. An understated public persona, Ducasse has been awarded 18 Michelin stars and has owned 23 restaurants. Shot over two years, Gilles de Maistre’s La quete d'Alain Ducasse / The Quest of Alain Ducasse was screened this year in Berlin. The TIFF screening is presented by LIDL and will be followed by a surprise dinner prepared by Florin Dumitrescu, one of Romania’s most beloved master chefs. Dumitrescu became a chef at 18; in the 12 years he spent in the kitchen, he cooked for celebrities like Nicolas Cage, Roger Federer, Wesley Snipes, Francis Ford Coppola, or Jean-Claude Van Damme. He will meet the TIFF patrons at the Bricks restaurant on May 30, at 8 PM.

Marieke Schroeder’s Schumann's Bar Talks also, well, talks of people and tastes. The founder of Schumann's Bar is an institution, and his book The American Bar has become a classic. At 75, Charles Schumann takes us on a global journey through the coolest bars from New York, through Tokyo, and back to Havana—looking at their history, people, and urban legends. The screening is scheduled for May 30, at 8 PM at Sapientia.
