Florin Zamfirescu, the Excellence Award
The Excellence Award, offered by Mercedes-Benz Romania, goes to Romanian actor Florin Zamfirescu (65), whose impressive film and theatre career began more than 4 decades ago.
He graduated from the Acting department of the Theatre and Film Institute in 1971 and two years later he was hired by the Odeon Theatre. He starred in over 35 shows and directed other 15. In 1996, he began teaching Acting at the National Theatre and Film University „I.L. Caragiale”, where he also served as rector between 2000 and 2008. His distinct voice can be heard in over 100 radio plays.
He appeared in over 40 films made by directors such as Lucian Pintilie, Dan Pița, Mircea Veroiu, Alexandru Tatos, Mircea Daneliuc, Manole Marcus, Andrei Blaier, Alexa Visarion, Nicolae Corjos, Nae Caranfil of Cristi Puiu: Actorul și sălbaticii, Mere roșii, Înainte de tăcere, De ce trag clopotele, Mitică?, Moromeții, Iacob, E pericoloso sporgersi, The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu, The Rest Is Silence, Killing Time and, more recently Child's Pose. Florin Zamfirescu received numerous acting awards, the Excellence Award in Cinema (2002), and the National Order of Merit as Knight (2002). He wrote the book "Actorie sau magie" (2003). The TIFF audience will be able to see him in Năpasta (1982), based on the short story by I.L. Caragiale and directed by Alexa Visarion.
