Stylish revenge at TIFF 2014

The art of revenge will be taught at TIFF 2014, via 12 films brought together under the thematic section Eye for an Eye, at the 13th edition of Transilvania International Film Festival (May 30 – June 8).

The 12 revenge movies from Eye for an Eye section are competing for the FIPRESCI Award.

"It could be that revenge is a dish best served cold, but it also is a terribly promising cinematic device thanks to the moral dilemmas which, more often than not, it triggers. Following in the footsteps of the previous TIFF thematic sections, the 2014 edition brings together 12 revenge movies and as many case studies that question the legitimacy and the consequences of exacting vengeance. in addition to the obvious bulk of tarantinesque violence, cruelty and dark humor which can be found in most of these films, there are two other very special types of revenge: through film (The Reunion) and through sex (Cheatin’)", says artistic director Mihai Chirilov.

The idea came to Mihai Chirilov after watching, in Locarno, the American indie Blue Ruin, by Jeremy Saulnier, which will be screened as a premiere in Cluj. Presented in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs section of Cannes, the film was financed through crowdfunding. Some great reviews were written about Calvary, the new film by John Michael McDonagh – screened at Sundance and Berlin – a black comedy about an Irish priest who finds out that he will be killed – the bearer of bad news is the killer himself, during confession. A good amount of dark humor is also to be found within In Order of Disappearance – one of the favorites in the Berlinale competition - with Stellan Skarsgaard starring as a father bent on revenging his son.

Revenge also triggers the story of Harmony Lessons (Silver Bear for the artistic contribution of DoP Aziz Zhambakiyev), A Touch of Sin, by Jia Zhangke (The best Screenplay award in Cannes 2013), Big Bad Wolves, a stylish exercise about cruelty endorsed by Quentin Tarantino, or Killers, an Indonesian psychological thriller presented at Sundance.
