Following the success of the Film Caravan project in 2009, the organizers of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) have decided to continue the cinema promoting campaign through an ample event of international reach.
TIFF, along with the Sofia, Sarajevo and Istanbul Film Festivals, will start off the Operation Kino TIFF Caravan program, financed through the Media International program of the EU, meant to redirect the public eye toward a better circulation and distribution of European films or those coming from countries outside the EU. In Romania, Operation Kino will be held following the 9th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival, between June 15 and August 1, 2010. Following the same pattern, local Caravans in the three partner countries will get underway, closely following the end of the respective local festival.
One of the major objectives of the Operation Kino project is to contribute to the development of the future generations of talented filmmakers, especially coming from the countries that take part in the Caravan.
Each festival will select 10-15 feature films which will be then screened in towns or regions in which people have no access to cinemas or in which screenings take place in less than average technical conditions. The included films will be split into three sections: the first will be comprised of films awarded the Grand Prize in 2009 at TIFF, as well as at the Sofia, Sarajevo and Istanbul Film Festivals. The second section will present the Caravan's public with the best European films of the last 2 years, while the third section is reserved to pictures coming from countries outside Europe.
Operation Kino will also feature a selection of short films that have won awards at the festivals participating in the project.
Amongst the films that so far have been confirmed to participate in Operation Kino are the future Romanian premiere The Cinematographic Caravan / Caravana cinematografică, directed by Titus Muntean, starring Mircea Diaconu, Dorian Boguţă, Iulia Lumânare, and the Bulgarian movie The World is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner, shortlisted for the Oscars, for Best Foreign Film.
In Romania, Operation Kino will travel to Mediaş, Zalău, Braşov, Târgu Mureş, Bacău, Timişoara, Oradea, Baia Mare, Alba Iulia, Turda, Deva, Sighişoara, Iaşi, Bistriţa, Bran, Tulcea, Sulina, Constanţa, Vama Veche.
